Lufft Snow Height Sensor SHM30 at ICIMOD-Station in Yala Glacier, Nepal

Langtang is a region in the Himalayas of Nepal to the north of the Kathmandu Valley and bordering Tibet. Since 2011, it has been the focus of intense glaciological, meteorological, and hydrological fieldwork over the past four years as part of the Norwegian-supported cryosphere monitoring project (Cryosphere Monitoring Program CMP). In order to observe air temperature, wind speed, solar radiation, precipitation and water levels in the area, which is mainly difficult to access and to supply with electricity, twelve autonomous meteorological and hydrological stations were installed throughout the valley.

The stations’ data serve weather nowcasts, forecasts and student trainings. These include three solar-powered SHM30 snow depth sensors from Lufft placed in the Yala Glacier and the Kyanjin Gompa, which is a part of the Langtang valley. In order to save energy, it’s operated without any heater delivering measured values at prevailing temperatures above -10 °C reliably.

ICIMOD was supplied by the Lufft distributor Real Time Solutions, located in Lalitpur, Nepal.
