Water Quality Project

HYDROLAB® – UNIVERSITY OF IOWA

Read the Case Study

Challenge:

Farming pollution, including nitrate contamination, is a big concern for Iowa. They needed data for models to evaluate water quality and volume and perform analysis to infer the sources of high nitrate water.

Solution:

Their nitrate monitoring program now includes 80 water quality monitoring stations for continuous measurement of NOx. Over 20 stations use HYDROLAB DataSonde 5X (DS5X) multiparameter sondes to measure and record conductivity.

Benefits:

Nitrate-loading data are essential for assessing amounts of nitrate entering streamsfrom farm fields to watch harmful algae blooms and low biodiversity. Long-termcontinuous water quality data can help highlight annual and diurnal patterns.

"In short, HYDROLAB data inform interpretations of nitrate data and support watershed modeling.”
