Solar Energy

Experts in Providing Solar Energy Measurement Solutions

The sun provides 99.98% of the energy for our planet (the rest is geothermal) and is responsible, directly or indirectly, for the existence of life on Earth.

The solar radiation reaching the ground is the key factor in determining the output of a solar energy plant, and this is heavily influenced by environmental and weather parameters.

OTT HydroMet’s Kipp & Zonen and Lufft have extensive knowledge and expertise in providing measurement solutions for these environmental and weather parameters.

Passion for Precision - Video

Kipp & Zonen is the world-wide specialist in the measurement of solar radiation. We offer a range of instruments for the measurement of global, diffuse and direct radiation.

Chinese University of Hong Kong Studies Outdoor 3D Radiant Fluxes

The Mean Radiant Temperature (TMRT) is one of the important indices governing human energy balance and thermal comfort of man as defined by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This is the uniform temperature of an imaginary enclosure in which radiant heat transfer from the human body equals the radiant heat transfer in the actual non-uniform enclosure.

Novel Estimation of Albedo Using a Drone Pyranometer

Novel Estimation of Albedo Using a Drone Pyranometer

By Charlotte Levy, PhD Student - Goodale & Fahey Labs, Cornell University and Martin LaChance, UAV Imaging Services – Understanding global climate change is a complex process, because small variations in hard to measure variables can turn into major impacts on the global scale. Albedo is a measure of the reflectiveness of a surface. When a surface reflects solar energy, rather than absorbing it as heat, it can result in major cooling both locally and globally.

Understanding the Future for Glaciers in the Himalaya

Understanding the Future for Glaciers in the Himalayas

After the polar ice caps, the Himalaya (‘abode of snow’ in Sanskrit) has the largest number of glaciers; more than thirty thousand square kilometers of the mountain range is covered by glacial ice. These glaciers are a focus of public and scientific debate related to the effects of climate change.

Leading PV in Datong, Shanxi with 14 Solar Monitoring Stations

In 2016, China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) announced a total PV installation target of 18.1GW for 2016, within which 12.6 GW are for standard types of PV installations, including both ground-mounted PV and distributed PV projects. The additional 5.5 GW are for demonstration projects within the PV Leader Program. The first demonstration projects have been built in Datong and are all monitored with Kipp & Zonen Solar Monitoring Stations.

The Sunniest Province in Canada, Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan is known for being the sunniest province in Canada and the ability to measure and quantify that fact is important. A Kipp & Zonen CSD 3 Sunshine Duration Sensor installed at the Saskatchewan Research Council’s new Climate Reference Station at the Conservation Learning Centre, just south of Prince Albert, assists in documenting this important feature of Saskatchewan.
